UNKNOWN CHEMIST [?] : c. LATE 18TH CENTURY RECIPE [RECEIPT] FOR 'THE KING'S EVIL' aka SCROFULA, TUBERCULOSIS

8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. On offer is a super manuscript recipe [receipt] to cure "The Kings Evil" more properly known as 'Tuberculous cervical lymphadenitis' or 'Scrofula' handwritten by an unidentified doctor or chemist. It is a lengthy recipe, prepared for Nelson Jackson of Hanover. The 8 x 8 inch paper is very fragile with a separation at the top horizontal fold line, other fold lines are weak, torn and fragile and requires careful handling. From one online source: The disease: Scrofula of the neck is the term used for tuberculosis of the neck, or, more precisely, a cervical tuberculous lymphadenopathy. Scrofula is usually a result of an infection in the lymph nodes, known as lymphadenitis and is most often observed in immune-compromised patients (about 50% of cervical tuberculous lymphadenopathy). About 95% of the scrofula cases in adults are caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, but only 8% of cases in children. The rest are caused by atypical mycobacterium (Mycobacterium scrofulaceum) or non-tuberculous mycobacterium (NTM). With the stark decrease of tuberculosis in the second half of the 20th century, scrofula became a very rare disease. With the appearance of AIDS, however, it has shown a resurgence, and presently affects about 5% of severely immune-compromised patients.. Manuscript. Book Condition: Poor
